See most people talk about the OSI model as having 7 layers but they don't mention layer 8 where a lot of the problems actually occur.

wow I'm totally envious of a lot of you. My network/lab (yes my lab is my home network... there is no better motivation than the wife saying "Hunnie where the hell is the wireless?")is all over the place. I have my 861W router on a wire rack in the corner of the room, A 2960 off of that on another wire rack on the other side of the room (don't ask why), and then a 2950 off the 2960 sitting in the tv cabinet serving internet to my TV, Blu-ray and AppleTV. single line connecting the 861W and the 2960. 2 port etherchannel connecting the 2960 and 2950. My philosophy is if it doesn't say Cisco, it doesn't run my network haha.

Some enviable racks here... sirsamon, that's just amazing!

Here's mine.

I made the cabinet two weeks ago since I couldn't get one to fit the corner I wanted it in. Not at a price I was willing to pay, anyway. The bottom of the cabinet is about a metre high, on top of another stand I made for a printer.

There are a couple of 7960 phones on the top, and a few more 2600s in a corner somewhere.

My favourite cable ties come off packs of croissants (particularly visible on the blue cable), although I occasionally use proper releasable plastic ones, and gaffer tape.

There is more kit in the loft (OpenBSD firewall/router fed from a /29 block from my ISP, couple of servers, distribution switches for the house, etc) but it isn't Cisco because I can't afford Cisco gigabit switches. There's a mix mostly of 3Com, HP and Colubris kit around the place. I have a 3Com 48-port 4500G switch on the way to add to the loft kit which will become the house switch. There's a gigabit fibre link from the loft, down the wall cavity to the hallway where my ADSL modem is in a cupboard near the phone line. That's to help protect from lightening strikes, which has killed my kit twice!

Oh, and a PC under my main desk, with GNS3 and several VMWare Workstation guests mapped to a trunk port out to the network rack.

Very cool, i love how everyone builds there networks differently :) and the way it can spark an idea for your own network.
This then leads to TANGENT !!! up all night re-configuring. :)
