Re: Cisco ACI

Fair enough Vito. There are some retorts that I would make, but honestly this thread has gone way too far into a negative direction that I really didn't intend it to that frankly I'm in a "insert foot A into mouth B" mode. The intent around the thread was to discuss ACI, and yes, because ...

Re: Cisco ACI

Regarding my question about FabricPath in ACI, I guess it's no longer supported on the 9k due to merchant silicon support according to: https://communities.cisco.com/thread/40325 However, it's interesting that in one of the slides on BRKAPP-9004, a bullet point states that the ACI fabric leverages ...

Re: Cisco ACI

I didn't want to make my above post too long, but I have some other random thoughts. This thread was in the back of my head a lot today (I was driving for over seven hours) and some things occurred to me. People like to bitch about Cisco a lot, and, as I said earlier in the thread, I can definitely ...

Re: Cisco ACI

Ugh, it's so hard to explain in a way you'll truly understand without having worked here. I've only been here for about 4 months or 5 months now.. I think? All you hear about is things like merchant silicon, partner integration, being open, SDN, extensibility in the OS, modular OS, etc.... So I hea...

Re: Cisco ACI

side topic, what are some good books on SDN? I've got this one in the pile already http://www.amazon.com/Software-Defined-Networking-SDN-definitive-ebook/dp/B00D5V02E0/ref=sr_1_5?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1398760716&sr=1-5&keywords=sdn I've never looked at the one you posted. This one is ...

Re: Cisco ACI

This thread inspired me to grab Arista Warrior. I'm not too far in (good book/info so far), but I had a few LOL moments when I saw the command examples. EOS is virtually a direct copy of IOS. Thinking of this thread and the idea of Cisco taking things from Arista, then seeing the CLI... I couldn't h...

Re: Cisco ACI

just spent 30 minutes reading this thread, and i feel like no conclusions were reached. i'm sharing this in hopes of leveling out tempers: http://i.imgur.com/CzCl7cp.gif No temper issues here. I'm genuinely curious about all of this, and, with my lack of exposure to Arista, it's nice to see explana...

Re: Cisco ACI

Again you're asking questions, so I will answer them honestly. 1. Honestly, I feel like ACI and the 9k were inspired by Arista to stay in the DC market. It bugs me that many of the things we do at Arista now are what Cisco will bring down the road and they call it innovation. I feel that the market...

Re: Cisco ACI

It's not "bitching" - it's pointing things out. You asked for examples and I provided. But yes I will admit it does bug me a little bit but I'm no longer going to comment on that and just stick to the tech - especially considering that because of who I work for, it will be seen as nothing...

Re: Cisco ACI

Hey dunno if you're still interested or not, but also check out the Application Centric Infrastructure webcast in the Policy Deep Dive section provided by Joe Onsisick, TME from the Insieme BU. At around 1:57 he states that Cisco doesn't really consider themselves as a member of the SDN community a...

Re: Cisco ACI

I have a colleague who's decided to screw all this vendor SDN stuff and just learn python/php for the next 12 months and get familiar with openflow, then see where the market is. I think that's not a bad step at all since all this SDN scripting stuff is all going to be based on open source interpre...

Re: Cisco ACI

I see this as another one of those "the more time I spend learning it, the less time I have to spend learning something else" type of things. And since it's still too early to tell, I'd rather spend the time learning that something else. On a different note, it seems that on the firewall ...

Re: Cisco ACI

That list is helpful, though a lot of it seems like accessory items that aren't uber useful. The DANZ thing sounds cool, I'll have to look into it more. Agile ports sound interesting, but how does it really work? Is it 4x10g lanes, or is it true 40g (this wouldn't make sense to me). Cisco can break ...

Re: Cisco ACI

Ah jeez. I see this is pointless and will only be seen as vendor bashing because of where I work. I could point out several things that are direct examples from Cisco Live breakouts describing what ACI will bring that we already do, and not because I'm trying to push a product - I'm totally not. It...

Re: Cisco ACI

I read part of that, but then I realized I don't think I've seen the marketing info you're referencing. I haven't seen anything from Cisco saying they're moving away from SDN. Every Cisco employee I've spoken with acknowledges that ACI/APIC/APIC EM/etc, is SDN.

Re: CIsco UCS or Do It Yourself (DIY)

This thread is right up my alley for my current project(s). I had Presidio on-site a couple weeks ago going over some designs of our SAN infrastructure and virtual infrastructure. I'm trying to remove many of our points-of-failure in the data center, respectively. Presidio brought UCS, Nimble and V...

Re: CIsco UCS or Do It Yourself (DIY)

This is off-topic, but I use Intel NUCs for my home lab. You need a NAS and two or more NUCs to build an awesome (and low power) ESX lab. This doesn't do much for learning UCS other than a place to run the emulator, which is all one should put in a home lab. Trying to buy B series for home is insane...

Re: Anyone looking to work in Texas?

Is $130k the cap? I'm not really looking to move, but it could be an interesting gig if it paid more.
